Mastersizer 2000 e-learning course (ELC1001)
Syllabus
The e-learning training consists of two on-line courses that are designed to raise the new user from novice to intermediate level.
Course 1 - Introduction to the Mastersizer (ELC0001)

Module 1 - Introduction to the Mastersizer
This module introduces the Mastersizer by giving an overview of what it is and what it does. It also allows the user to identify the different Mastersizer models and accessories available.

Module 2 - Measurement overview
This module gives a very basic overview of the measurement process.

Module 3 - Hardware overview
This module describes some of the hardware features of the instrument and accessories.

Module 4 - Software overview
This module gives an overview of some of the main features of the Mastersizer software.

Module 5 - Sample preparation
Sample preparation is key to good results. This module touches on some of the basic issues that the user should be aware of. Note that this important subject is expanded on in Course 2.

Module 6 - Making a measurement
This module will expand on the measurement process outlined in module 2.

Module 7 - Viewing the results
Once the measurement has been made, the results can be viewed in various reports. This module gives an overview of the options available to view the results.

Module 8 - Manual and SOP measurements
This short module briefly explains the difference between a Manual measurement and an SOP measurement and discusses when you would use each type.

Course 2 - Making good measurements (ELC0002)

Consisting of a series of nine modules, this course takes the user from the basics of particle size analysis through to method development and maintenance.

Module 1: Introduction and basic principles.
This module explains what is meant by the term “particle size” and how is it measured using laser diffraction?

Module 2: Obtaining and understanding the size distribution.
How does the instrument produce a size distribution, what types of data does it produce and what do they tell us?

Module 3: Data quality
Understanding how to recognize and obtain high quality data

Module 4: Optical properties of sample materials
Knowing optical properties, such as refractive indices, is a necessary requirement when calculating particle size distributions from laser diffraction data. How can this be achieved in practice?

Module 5: Analysis Models
This module allows you to understanding the different analysis models provided in the Mastersizer 2000 software and helps you determining which is the most appropriate for the analysis of your samples.

Module 6: Sampling
The Mastersizer 2000 is capable of giving you measurement repeatability better than 1%. Do your sampling methods match this capability?

Method screening.
The key to achieving robust method development and transfer is the establishment of a reliable method screening protocol. We have two modules covering this important subject:

Module 7: Method screening – Wet measurements
This module describes the requirements for the dispersion of samples in liquid-based dispersants.

Module 8: Method screening – Dry dispersions
This module describes the requirements for the dispersion of dry powders using a dry powder feeder.

Module 9: Maintenance
Simple maintenance procedures for keeping the Mastersizer in good working order.

FAQ

Q: Do I have to take all the courses in one go?
A: No. The courses are designed so that you can start and stop at any point. When you return to the course (hours or days later) you can continue from the point you last left off.

Q: Can I only watch the courses once?
A: You can run through the courses as many times as you want. If you don't understand a section - replay it as many times as you wish.

Q: Do I only have one attempt at the test at the end of each section?
A: Again - No. You can take the tests as many times as you want until you pass. We are only interested that you learn the content - a few people will pass first time, most will need several attempts. Note that the number of attempts does not count against your pass score, so relax and enjoy the course!

Q: How long do I have to take the course?
A: You have open access for 3 months. You are welcome to take the course as many times as you wish in that period. You may find that it would be helpful to take the course again as a "refresher" when you get more experience of using the instrument.

Q: Do I get a certificate when I complete each course?
A: Yes - but you must pass ALL the modules in each course.

Q: What equipment do I need to receive this training?
A: You will need:

• A fast internet connection.
• Web browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer v6 or Mozilla Firefox v1 or newer)
• Macromedia Flash Player version 8 or later
• Sound card and speakers or headphones

Q: How do I order and get access?
A: Add the training course to your shopping basket and pay for it by credit card. Alternatively, you can raise an order by contacting your local representative.

Once your order has been accepted, you will be sent a registration form to complete for the individual(s) that will be taking the course.

Finally, once we receive your registration form, a training account will be setup and the student will be sent their login information.
